ShiftScope Privacy Policy

ShiftScope by BigStarfish · Effective November 2, 2026

ShiftScope is a browser extension that records a workflow you perform and turns it into a step-by-step guide with annotated screenshots. It is built to keep your work on your own computer.

What ShiftScope records

While you are recording, ShiftScope captures your clicks, typed text, page addresses, and a screenshot of each step, in the tab you are recording. It records only while you have pressed record, and you stop it at any time.

Where that data lives

Everything ShiftScope records is stored locally in your own browser, on your own computer. ShiftScope has no account system, no sign-in, and no telemetry or analytics. The extension does not send your recordings, guides, or usage data to BigStarfish or to anyone else on its own.

When data leaves your computer

• You export or share a guide. A guide leaves your computer only when you export it to a file (PDF, DOCX, HTML, video, or a .shiftscope guide file) and send or upload that file yourself, for example into your company's own BigStarfish workspace.
• Optional AI descriptions. ShiftScope can write step descriptions using an AI provider. This is off until you add your own API key in Settings. When you turn it on, step text is sent to the provider you chose, under that provider's own terms. No key, nothing is sent.
• Optional voice narration and voice-over. Voice narration uses your microphone during a recording, once your browser has asked for your permission, and needs your own API key. Your audio is sent to the transcription provider you chose (OpenAI or Groq) under that provider's own terms. Video voice-over also needs your own key, and sends step text to the voice provider you chose. No key, nothing is sent.

Blur before you share

Before a guide is exported, you can blur any part of any screenshot. Fields you mark are blurred, and the blur is burned into the exported picture, so a blurred value is not recoverable from the export. Review your screenshots before sharing a guide, since blur is applied to what you mark.

Typed text

Step text can include what you typed. A .shiftscope guide file removes typed text by default. PDF, Word, HTML, and video exports include your step text as written, and screenshots show what was on screen unless you blur it, so review a guide before you share it.

Passwords

ShiftScope never reads or stores the value of a password field.

Why the extension asks for its permissions

• Access to websites you visit: to capture the steps and screenshots of the workflow you are recording, on whatever site that workflow runs. The extension loads on the pages you visit so it is ready when you press record, and it writes steps and takes screenshots only during a recording you started.
• Storage: to keep your guides on your own computer.
• Tabs and navigation: to follow the workflow when it moves between pages or tabs during a recording.
• Side panel and screenshots: to show your guides and take each step's picture.
• Offscreen page: to record microphone narration when you use it. Your browser asks for microphone permission first.

What BigStarfish receives

Nothing from the extension on its own. BigStarfish receives a guide only when you send one: by uploading your exported file on the ShiftScope page, or by importing it into your company's BigStarfish workspace.

A guide you send on the ShiftScope page, with your email address, goes to our team so we can review the task and reply. We keep it on our systems, in an area limited to our managers, along with your contact record. To have it deleted, write to hello@bigstarfish.com. A guide imported into your company's workspace is governed by your company's agreement with BigStarfish.
